A Different type of Paradise

The Big Island, this is the first time we've been here.

Here we find more volcanic rock, because there is still an active volcano, Kilauea. The landscape was definitely different from the images of Hawaii that I am used to seeing, but it was an interesting experience and I would love to go back and explore this island some more.

Up on Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii, there were some observatories that you could walk into and see. Unfortunately at around 13,800 ft, the air is really thin so I ended up getting a massive headache.
The view from that height was amazing though.

Of course you can't go to Hawaii without going to a Luau! Which is a traditional Hawaiian feast with entertainment. Some feature foods are poi, lomi salmon, and kalua pig (seen below) being taken out of an underground oven or imu.

For the entertainment they had a traditional opening ceremony of the feast, hula dancers, Hawaiian music and fire dances.

We decided to check out some other hotels in the area. We went to the Hilton, which was huge! They had a boat and tram system within the hotel itself.

Other than the fact that they had a mini water park as their pool area, there was one point of this resort that really got me. They have an area where you can swim with the dolphins! DOLPHINS! (I love dolphins, if you couldn't tell from my excitement)

My dad is a huge fan of macadamia nuts, so we had to go to the source. It was interesting to see how difficult it is for them to actually deshell them, no wonder why they are so expensive.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! Now we didn't actually go see the lava streaming out in the ocean, mainly because it was in a more remote part of the island at the time. But we did get to enjoy some hikes throughout the park to different less active hot spots.

Back to the mainland we go...

Goodbye Hawaii, until we meet again.
